Aside soccer, music is probably the next thing that the world knows us for. Our genre of music has gone places for sometime now thanks to a few ground-breaking artists.So sit back, relax and let’s us introduce to you, 17 Ghanaian musicians who are selling Ghana to the world (in no particular order).
1. Rocky Dawuni
Rocky is one of the musicians from Ghana whose music touches the world due to his unique voice (which sounds just like the legendary Bob Nesta Marley of blessed memory).Many however find it hard to believe he even hails from Ghana. Through his music, Ghana has been put in the lime light. His song was even featured in one of EA sports’ FIFA games.
2. Daddy Lumba
Daddy Lumba was once the reason why some tourists would love to visit the country. Through him, Ghana gained a lot of popularity around the world.3. Osibisa
This group made so much waves around the world they were once the most sought after band all over the globe.Though it was made up of different people from different countries, Ghanaians constituted the biggest part of the group and it was also formed by a Ghanaian.
We can’t make a list without adding them, they’ve contributed a great deal for this country when it comes to music.
4. Kojo Antwi
There is no way we can complete this list without mentioning Kojo Antwi. He’s one of the guys who helped push Ghana music to the world.5. Fuse ODG
Since his release of “Azonto” and selling it to the world, he has never forgotten his roots. He’s also kept the fire burning. He’s won MOBO Award for Best African Act, three years in a row.6. Wiyaala
After winning the Vodafone Icons edition, this lady never rested on her oars and has since sold Ghana to the world.Her music is loved by most foreigners around the globe and she’s gaining a lot of international recognition.
7. Fokn Boiz
You may hate or love them but this group is making it around the world. Ghanaians might scorn them as much as they want but the world loves them and they are one of the few musicians selling Ghana to the world.8. Shatta Wale
You might refer to him as being controversial but take it or leave it, this young man is making waves around the world and most people love him and in effect, he’s selling the country through music to the world.9. Stonebwoy
Stonebwoy until recently wasn’t that well known but he’s managed to pull through the woods and made it. Not only did he break through the Ghanaian market, he also made his presence known around the world and he’s gotten recognition from stars around the world.10. King Ayisoba
You might not hear much of his songs in Ghana but in other parts of the world, he stands as a demi-god and is worshiped by most of his fans around the world. You should see him perform live.11. Atongo
Atongo set a world record with his ground breaking song, “Heaven there’s no Beer” and this song has sent him places. With his natural music instrument, he’s still making hits out of the country and performing to large crowds around the world and in a way selling the country. Everywhere he goes with his band, he never forgets his Ghana flag.12. Sonnie Badu
There are many Ghanaian gospel musicians but Sonnie Badu’s gospel has traveled farthest selling the country to the world in the process.13. M.anifest
Talk about one hip hop artist from Ghana who is taking the world by storm and M.anifest can’t be sidelined because this dude right here has made Ghana the heartbeat of music to the world.14. Sarkodie
We are sure any Sarkodie fan reading this wouldn’t have accepted this list if we hadn’t mentioned his name. Of course he deserves it.He has shown that he just didn’t come in for fame, he came in for business and he’s not resting on his oars and for some time now, he’s the one the world mentions when it comes to rap music in Ghana. He stands out and he’s sold the country to the world in many ways.
15. Reggie Zippy and Bollie (Reggie N Bollie)
This duo were once solo musicians in Ghana, they made hits in the country and that was the last we heard of them. Out of the blue, we heard they’ve teamed up to form Men on Point to participate in the “Britain’s Got Talent” reality show. They were however eliminated at the next stage due to contractual issues with their then record label. They, went back, prepared and came on the X-Factor show where they showed to the world what they’ve got. Since then, they’ve been making a lot of waves. They’ve never betrayed where they come from, they’ve made sure to promote the country with their music and they are doing great.16. Afro Moses
Afro Moses does not really sell in Ghana but in Europe, he’s a hot cake. The man is even a professor of music in one of the Universities in Europe teaching African music.He’s the only Ghanaian musician who uses Ghana’s way of life and our culture to tell the our story. This is his way of selling the country to the world.
17. Blitz the Ambassador
Blitz used to be called “Cy Lover” and was featured on most of Obrafour’s earlier albums. After graduating from Achimota School in 2000, Blitz (as he had come to be known) was first recognized by Ghanaian Ace producer Hammer of The Last Two.Now living in the United States, in late 2009, he was chosen as of one Beyond Race Magazine’s “50 Emerging Artists,” resulting in a spot in the publication’s #11 issue (with Bodega Girls and J. Cole on the cover), as well as an exclusive Q&A for the magazine’s site. In 2015, Blitz received the Vilcek Prize for Creative Promise in Contemporary Music.
